Spring Breakers *WARNING: SPOILERS*

Spring BreakersI just came home from watching Spring Breakers at Hot Docs Cinema (Bloor Cinema) at TIFF 2012. The first words that comes to mind after watching this movie… “what the f*ck did I just watch?”

The camera work is shaky (if that is what they were going for, I really don’t think it works for this film, especially in some scenes), the editing feels sloppy because scenes go back and forth, and voice-overs feel like they are said more than once, and the story just feels very slow and boring.

When you hear that the movie is supposed to be about Spring Break going horribly wrong, you think a lot worse is going to happen.

James Franco as “Alien” is probably the best thing about the film. His character is so bad that everything he says is funny, and then James Franco just gives it that little bit extra to make it more hilarious. If you are planning on going to see this movie for Selena Gomez, I advise you see something else. She plays a girl who goes to Church College and leaves maybe 30-40 minutes into the movie never to be seen again.

So what is this movie really about? Four college girls, who have been friends since Kindergarden, want to get out of their boring, basic town for Spring Break. Two of the girls decide to rob a store, and get a third girl to help them get a car to be the driver. They rob the place using fake guns, pull-over masks and a lot of yelling. They burn the car, go tell the other girl about it, and shortly after can be seen heading to Florida for Spring Break.

Every thing was going on how a normal Spring Break does, until they randomly get arrested, and bailed out by “Alien”. They start to hang out with him after he bails them out, and Selena’s character, Faith, gets scared and goes home. The other 3 girls continue to hang out with Alien and begin robbing other various places. While doing this, Alien apparently was on another ‘gangsters’ ‘turf’, and one of the girls get shots in the arm. She gets scared, and goes home to never be seen again.

Finally, the last 2 girls, Ashley Benson & Vanessa Hudgens characters, Brit & Candy, are still with Alien, and decide to go to the guys house and rob and/or kill them. James Franco’s character gets killed before they even get inside the house, and the girls continue along killing everyone and stealing the guys car. The final scene is the girls driving away in an orange Lambo.

The script is strange, the characters are strange, the editing feels strange, and every now and then you have Skrillex blaring at you (especially at the beginning of the movie). Overall I’d give this movie a 4/10. The best part of the entire movie was when the 3 girls were dancing with guns while Alien and them were singing a Britney Spears song.

Thanks for stopping by and reading my review on Spring Breakers! I hope you enjoyed it. Feel free to leave a comment to let me know what you liked or didn’t like about it!

Got to say thanks for the spoilers. Out of any movie I’ve felt skeptical about paying to see this because it looks all trashy.

    • Blerg says:

the trash humpers zinger is great lol; also this movie is as much of a pile as trash humpers was. Although your pseudo-intellectual friends will try and tell you otherwise there’s nothing more to this film then empty dumb people do empty dumb shit filmed in a jarring manner.

  2. Jaimie says:

The empty dumb people doing empty dumb shit is the point. Compare it to Honey BooBoo or playboy. We want women to be objects, even if they are trashy, trashy in many different ways – disposable or laughed at then disposed of. The brutality of the movie forces FORCES the audience to consider what it means to be a woman chasing the gratification of pop culture, and the hyperbolic story forces the audience to consider the consequences – on the soul, or on the lives of those in community at large.

This Movie Sounds like trash lol I wanted to see selena gomez get anal haha. This movie is gonna flop so hard at the box office >-< haaaa. Guess the biebs couldn't help Selena with this..

@Jaimie. You are the psuedo-intellectual friend Blerg was talking about. I really hope your trolling, I really really do. I have not seen the movie, nor do I plan to, and I really appreciate the spoiler/”plot-line” this blog exposed. Why? Because I didn’t want to watch it, and wanted to make sure my assumption was right. And it seems so.
Jaimie. The way this movie is being advertised; it is being advertised to youth ages 13-21. Maybe a few older adults will see it, but it’s mostly going to be kids begging their parents to let them see it. A few trashy college kids. And you know what? I highly doubt they’ll be pondering it and saying “WOW! Look how this objectifies women!” They’ll say “PROJECT X MAN PARTYYYY WOOO!!! CRAZY SPRING BREAK LET’S GO TO MIAMI!” I’m assuming, that’s what the preview seems to promote. It seems to have a very specific target audience, that of project x.
You can also say project x did all of those things. But actually. It just made money off of the dumb kids wanting to do dumb shit and ending up getting killed because they havn’t been taught to think for themselves. They’ve been forced to intake whatever they see and believe it to be true and awesome.
You can say it’s artsy. You can say it has a deeper meaning. But that doesn’t mean it does. If you want deeper meaning, artsy films, watch some indie flicks or some French films. It’s not that hard. You looked a little too deep, and that’s good, because you’re thinking! But it just reminded me of this: http://www.hulu.com/watch/465917#i1,p50,d1

Lololol, @ A – you’re the pseudo-intellectual friend hes describing. Maybe some day you’ll wake up and figure that out.

Your assumptions (which you make several times in your post) scream egotistical, condescending, and that you’re unable to think for yourself.

Go watch some Indie flick, that’s good! It means you’re thinking : )

      • boner says:

Lol and i know the long-winded reply is coming (your ego forces you to check the ‘notify me of all replies’ box – funny how that works huh?), save it for someone else I’ll forget i posted this when my drugs wear off : )

        Ta ta!!

  5. DJ-JD says:

The two girls who drove away – they were having a dream in that night in jail. Everything including Alien was a dream. They were fantasizing about what a ‘cool’ life would look like. It is a cautionary tale of our ‘yutes’ today worshipping the ‘gangsta’ and porn culture.
